We are in at the start of this dreadful new virus in 2020. I am in the `stay at home group `.
This causes all sorts of problems. Luckley I have use of a garden, secluded by the river, I am
the only one to use it, so far. I have been using it, and walking along a small stretch of it.
I decided today, instead of lounging around in house clothes, to dress up, as if I was going out
every day. We are advised to keep at least, six feet apart from another person.
I my group over the seventies, we are advised to stay indoors for several months. This can
create problems. Getting medicines, I usually go the the pharmacy & collect it myself, by using
a bus, now that is out. I doubt if I can walk that far ( a mile + up hill ) I am to phone the pharmacy
to see if they can deliver it to my door. My nearest relative has hospital problems, with her mother
so she cannot collect it. I am writing a day to day account, on another site. More later, when I write.

Castle 261: In my village there are 'helpers' who will fetch items from a pharmacy. Have you gone on social media like FB to check this out? I wish you well and I am in the same group as you. I have been out for walks and kept a distance from others. It's not easy but do-able.  Keep us up dated, and may I call you Castle for short?

Regards
Mike

Can anyone please tell me what the significance of loo rolls is that causes panic buying of them?

Apparently the reason people are panic buying and stockpiling loo rolls has been discovered.
Amid the fears associated with Covid 19 Corona virus, every time some one sneezes or coughs in public 100 people s**t themselves.

Castle. There are always some people who take advantage of the situation at the expense of the rest. Even in WW2 we had spivs. Well, I hope they get stuck with them! Incidentally, is the 261 your "last three?" " Castle.J.D." "Sir, 261". " Three  pounds, seven shillings and eight pence". Presumably you were at some time in the forces?
Title: Re: Coronavirus. 2020
Post by: castle261 on March 19, 2020, 06:54:04 PM
D.S.  I went to Maidstone for my R.A.F. medical in 1944 -- declared medically unfit - Asthma.
Now your other query - the 261 refers to the house number, where we use to live.
The family moved out, while we were evacuated to South Wales.
( They tried to tell us, you are not wanted ) - ha! ha --  :o

Dont understand Castle J.D. -  Sir, 261 - Oh - I get it now, service number - No.

` Three pound, seven shillings, and eight pence `--  Wartime weekly forces wages, for a officer ` ?

Post by: Dave Smith on March 20, 2020, 03:51:59 PM
Castle. On pay parade, you always used your " last three"(of a 7 figure- or in my case 6 figure) service number to distinguish you from anyone else. The l s d I quoted was just an example. How is your self isolation going? Are you beginning to finish your diary each day with " boring"? I am fortunate that I'm living with my daughter as we walk the dogs each day but keep well clear of anyone we meet- & they with us- so all is well so far. My daughter is great at supporting local shops, so we can have things delivered even if rather more expensive than a supermarket. As she says, "this is the time when they need us as much as we need them, otherwise they will just disappear".

On the plus side, the very few commercially working windmills and watermills in the UK are reporting a years worth of flour sales in the last two weeks due to massive demand.  None in Kent though.

Not boring D.S. the last 10 days of isolation have flown by. I am looking for a small ball, then I can
take up putting, in the garden. I have plenty to keep me going, making stew, writing stories, cook
meals. I use the internet for research. Have plenty of food, daughter helps me, without contact.
I have no need to go out, just yet, as I can live with my self. Plenty to do, keeps me going.
I have the garden, there are several wooden chairs around, where I can write, sketch, view the
river, right down to old dockyard & Upnor. I often take tea & a paper down there. Nice & quiet.

Slightly more seriously, there have been reports of sewers being blocked by wet wipes, tissues, kitchen roll and newspaper.  Toilet tissue is designed to break down when wet, the others are meant to hold their strength.  If you block the pipe leading from your house to the main sewer you have to pay for someone to dig it up or rod it.  Be careful!

The newspaper`s for the toilet, was a Friday night affair. We provided enough paper to what we
though would last a week. String, was the upper class way, of hanging the paper.  A nail was
considered a `common`way of finishing the `job`.

Stuart, a relative had a blockage in their drain once and had to have it cleared. They had two teenage daughters, so I expect you can guess what was causing it :-[

Probably.... My step daughter had a blockage - turned out that my then 4 year old grandson thought it was a great game to flush 4 toy cars and a bar of soap down the toilet. He's a teenager now.

Shopping at Morrisons Walderslade this morning, they allowed 50 people in at a maximum and then 1 in 1 out basis, waited 20 mins to get in not too bad. Waited spaced 2 metres apart.
Hardly any tinned food and no frozen food veg items.

All very calm.

I have been indoors for two weeks now and have to rely on family for shopping, I would have no hope from supermarket deliveries. My Grandaughter lives quite near and has volunteered , but she has  two small girls and is pregnant as well, her partner is a Key Worker so hopefully he will do the honours. But how I hate not going to buy my own grub. Past the age limit and considered vulnerable .
Hope you all stay safe and well  and the dog may get a walk later ?

Nothing to do with the latest virus but many moons ago, about 1956 fro memory, our family was put into isolation because our elder sister caught typhoid fever.
She worked at a government health lab. or something and when taking test tubes of specimens somewhere one of the tubes full of "excrement" had a crack and she got contaminated.
My father and mother  nursed her for several days before calling the doctor who at first said she just had a bad dose of flu...... a couple of days later he returned after a desperate call from the oldies and he absolutely flew down the stairs to drive to a phone box to call for an ambulance. No mobiles in those days and most of us didn't have a house phone either.
6 weeks in isolation and neighbours and other family used to drop off stuff for us after buying it from local stores.
The only other person in the UK to have typhoid that year was the bloke whose specimen she'd  caught it off.
Strangely or maybe not, after 6 weeks of being virtually locked up I've been a loner ever since.......

@Lyn I've just received an email from Sainsbury's which includes a section on "Elderly and vulnerable customers".  If you identify yourself as in this category you get "priority over all slots".  This week Sainsbury's (and one would guess all other supermarkets) will receive the government database "which tells us which people in England the government considers to be most vulnerable".  If you are already registered they will write to you.  The section finishes with an apology to regular customers and hopes "you can understand why we feel the need to prioritise elderly and vulnerable customers at the moment".
Beyond the quoted section I have no further information.

I have had problems paying for home shopping with ASDA using Chrome browser.
I assumed the delay was just overload on the system.
I have since discovered that the payment process at the end of the shopping DOES NOT work with Chrome.
I have successfully got through the payment process, trouble free, using Internet Explorer and Firefox.
(It may affect other supermarkets online as well.)

Since many of you may be relying on home shopping right now, be aware.

For anyone who is interested, particularly in querying the self isolating situation. I am 89 & currently staying in isolation with my daughter in SW Scotland- Isle of Whithorn, which is pretty remote. The husband of a friend, living a couple of miles away, is a member of the local sub aqua club. They dive for scallops & had their first outing last week-end. A lady member came across from Yorkshire & went out in the boat with them. 2 members, incl. the husband ( the first in the Isle), have gone down with the symptoms of C19 this week; the Y. lady had no symptoms. My daughter said her friend & husband had said, " they would take their chances going out". Which seems to have been a bad choice.

Well said Colin. I'm an Atheist myself, but I have nothing but admiration for those in the caring professions who daily put their health and potentially, lives, on the line to continue giving vital care to those who need it. Indeed, the same goes for all those in vital jobs. Doctors, nurses, those who look after the IT services which help us stay in touch with loved ones, those who keep the water and sewage flowing, the lights on and the shelves in the shops as full as possible. For those people who need to go out to receive essential services, the cleaners who keep those places safe and clean.

Well done for mentioning the cleaners Stuart.  It's so easy to assume that only doctors and nurses are required to run hospitals.  You can also add in the catering staff, without whom the staff and patients would die of starvation!

I'd also add my old mates in the Gas Industry, they have reduced numbers and on emergency footing to make sure that they can turn out to gas leaks and CO matters. On top of that I have had to callout a plumber today after a pipe sprung a leak.
Many different people carry on as best they can to keep vital services running all behind the scenes.

Our Church has had to close but we are using zoom and whats app to keep in touch especially with a lot of elderly who are very lonely and in need of shopping, prescriptions picked up  and so on.

Stuartwaters, Yes many churches are managing electronically we have quite a number in their 80's so they are stuck at home and not familiar with mobiles let alone whats app etc. They are just relying on phone calls and friends getting their shopping. Local Morrisons seems to be easing but still significant gaps on the shelves like eggs, tinned products & frozen veg.

So how is everybody doing? What are we all doing to keep ourselves occupied during the lock down?

I'm fortunate enough to be a key worker, working as I do in the sewage and drainage industry. That said, I'm off work at the moment, taking some Annual Leave I booked months ago. We were originally going to go away for the week in our caravan, but that wasn't going to happen once the lock down was announced. I'm keeping myself occupied in my workshop but I'm almost out of scrap timber to make things out of. Walking the dog takes up an hour or two of the day and researching the (very long) career of HMS Royal William (1671 - 1813).

When this is all over, my wife and I intend to take the grandchildren away in the caravan for a few days to give my daughter and son in law some time to take a breather.

Back to work after Easter.....

I too ventured out for the first time in about 3 weeks.  I had to go to the doctor's to get my 12-weekly implant that's keeping my cancer under control.  I also picked up my copy of Reed's - shame I can't get onto my boat though.  :'(   It's back to gardening duties and DIY now though for the next 9 weeks.

I'm actually one of those few people that doesn't mind a bit of peace and quiet, and the rare opportunity to do research for the next Volume of my book, even if it is only online research.  I have noticed that various people appear to be going temporarily insane though, particularly in social media circles.

I go shopping two or three times a week, with a planned triple hit on LIDL, Tesco and M & S.

I'm technically a key worker, but company aren't enforcing it, and I've been furloughed.  This does give me the opportunity to travel a bit further if I get bored, with that key worker ID.  I'm so far resisting though....

I have been in isolation for four weeks, tomorrow. I have made up games to play. One is a putting
golf game We had the grass cut yesterday, so with my putter ( a walking stick ) and my ball, some
roller up piece`s of ( kitchen foil ) I played, first 32 strokes, then the second, a hole in one.
I also made a hoopla game, a kitchen paper towel stand ( marvellous, what you find in the kitchen )
and some bendy rubber, to make rings. I keep a score, gardener 0, me 35, although the gardener,
is not here, today. I was given a face mask today, by a neighbour, another brought a loaf of bread.

We did plan to have a holiday this week as we normally do for our wedding anniversary. When this all started decided not to book in case and as it worked out would have had to cancel. Last year we decided to go to Italy around this time we did decide to put it off a year glad we did.
Currently reduced shopping once a week if possible and going out for a walk when we can. Still finding eggs and cleaning stuff is short supply.

After completing my month of solitary confinement, I may have undone ALL that.
I accepted a loaf of bread from a neighbour, he handed it to me, & I accepted it, without thinking.
The other was another neighbour, asked if I would like a face mask, I said `yes`. He went to get
one (he was wearing one) then he came back with one, inside a kitchen paper towel.
Before i could stop him (I was writing at the time) he walked right up to me & handed me the mask.
His flat mate was beside him, they are both retired & charity workers normally.

I shall have to wait now, all the precaution may, have been in vain. It is easy to let your guard slip.

I really hope  you haven't undone all your precautions Castle261 . It is easy to let your guard slip as we are so not used to any of this. Today I ventured to my local shop , only the 2nd time in  over 3 weeks , but not many customers and plenty of precautions . Not much on the shelves but plenty of LOO rolls ;D .
Got what I needed and will now stay in until I have to venture out again.
Take care  x

We have seen lots of " thank yous" to various groups of workers & I'm certainly not decrying any of them but I've seen nothing about agricultural workers- our Land Army. They're still doing their 07.30 -18.30, 6 & 7 days a week, up here in SW Scotland & I'm sure elsewhere, to keep us fed with fresh vegetables, milk, meat, etc. We're also probably getting quite a lot from the Continent ( M2 & M20 busy as ever?). Certainly the A75 from (Belfast)/ Stranraer is still fairly busy, so Eire & N.I. are still exporting. So, here's to the agricultural workers & farmers, plus all the associated lorry drivers., without whom life would be extremely difficult. "Good on You".

In an interdependent society we all rely on very many groups.  It's nothing new, there's a humorous Scots song pointing out that weavers were essential in c.1800: https://sangstories.webs.com/warkotheweavers.htm (https://sangstories.webs.com/warkotheweavers.htm) Once you start on the list it will grow to encompass most of the workforce: mariners, dockers, electricity workers, rail, gas, shops (vital link between the farmer and my stomach), sewers, undertakers - the list is nearly endless.  The special praise that the front line care staff have been getting is in recognition of them going into hazardous places (ICUs) and taking risks with their health.  Rather like the front line soldiers who go into combat.  Nothing to decry the "back room boys", but the risks at Bletchley Park were rather less than those at Gold Beach.  Likewise working hard in the open air largely on your own is a lot safer than crowding around an intensive care bed.

Thoroughly agree, the Government are doing their best & I'm sure no decisions are taken lightly, they have to rely on people who are employed as experts in the subject. Trouble with the media is that no news is good news.

It seems that the requirements for a newsreader now are, " can you find the bad news & keep worrying it to death?" e.g.Rolls Royce having to sack many of their workers. I'm sure that, like me the Chief Executive was itching to say, " how the hell should I know" (or something more graphic!) when asked " when are you likely to get back to normal?".

It would be hard to expect much in the way of positive news at the time of a global pandemic.

The UK press is indeed in a strange place right now. I've seen lots of articles praising those brave NHS workers who died. There's been many stories covering folk fund raising for NHS. What about those articles covering the creativity of groups making PPE off their initiative for NHS staff. Here's an example of a positive story in the Daily Mail, which shows the mood of the country and the press being pretty much in synch.(I have some Kent ones saved somewhere).

Hi Lyn. I'd like to think that kind of thing was the "mood of the nation". There was also the call for volunteers, and over a million stepped forward, IIRC. The Clap for Carers every Thursday. The whole "Sir" Captain Tom phenomenon and those who donated. Within hours of the lockdown a chap from our road put a note through everyone's door offering help for those self-isolating.

I strongly suspect that while we rightly praise the 'Frontline heros' there a lot more in the background who fail to do even their normal job properly. Remember the last 'Foot and Mouth' outbreak? Nobody could remember how to tackle it, so they called in the army. This time the PPE we had got was in the wrong place and there wasn't a proper system to deliver it. Call in the army again. It's easy to blame Ministers but if the 'support staff' don't do their job then the efforts of the heros will be reduced.

Unfortunately support staff and medical experts are appointed by governments in place, so it's not unfair to blame the people that appointed them.  It's on the news this morning that our current Prime Minister scrapped a Pandemic response committee six months before it hit.  This had been in place for a number of years, waiting for the supposedly inevitable.  Unfortunate timing on that one is just about the kindest words I can use.

The government can make as many rules/guidelines as it wants but its all a bit pointless when you see on the news the crush of people trying to get into a London west end store this morning.

Social distance average : about an inch.
Percentage wearing masks : about 15
Percentage wearing masks but not covering their noses : 25
Vital merchandise sold in the store : Nike trainers

Think what you like about Boris and his colleagues efforts do but try to make intelligent comments that do not benefit from the luxury of hindsight.
This is a pandemic, not a game about political point scoring.

Alec.

Hindsight is always a cheap political tool.
Just wait for the blame-game, which will last for a further few years and could even topple a government. Could anyone have done it differently? We shall hopefully never know, though with the typical man/woman in the street more worried about getting that pointless un-needed bargain instead of being responsible for the greater good of all, who knows what will happen?

August 23rd 2020 - I have just been out - for the first time - yesterday - for Sunday diner.
I have been in Isolation since March 10th - over six months. I did not know `what` to expect.
I noticed one cafe closed - one cafe opened - opposite each other. It seemed that I had never
spent that time away from a lot of people. My daughter wore a mask, to protect me. in her car.
I had been thinking of going for a short walk yesterday- but the opportunity came along.
Then you are very old, you are not sure, how far you will be able to walk - after isolation.
I had intended to walk - 200 yards or so - just to see - how I would get on - no buses for me
yet - as I am still not sure - what the procedure is - it has been explained to me - wearing of a

castle261. Time flies, but you MUST try & get out to do a bit of walking as your body really needs it. Just round the block, if no one's about is much better than nothing. Don't worry about the mask if your asthma precludes it, no one will shout at you & you will see others without them. Hope the dinner was good, it makes a pleasant change not to have to cook doesn't it?  My son is home from Luxembourg & works from home- modern technology!- so I go to his for dinner on Sunday evenings, nice. Anyway, welcome back to the upwardly mobile!

Castle261, nobody is required to wear a mask to go for a walk. Masks are needed on buses, shops etc. Go for a walk. If you are at all concerned about bumping into people then do what my neighbor does and go around the block early or late in the day. It will feel odd at first, but you do need to exercise and getting out will make you feel normal again.

Yes, My sister has finally ventured out on her own today using the bus to go shopping in Chatham. she tells me she feels much more confident now.
We have been back at church for a couple of weeks now and slowly numbers are rising but many more staying away. The groups that meet at the church hall are also starting up. All of them are masking up to go into the building and using the hand sanitiser but things are slowly getting back.

More information is likely to be made available when eventually it is going to be made available. I make my decision then. But as things stand I'm not too high on the list but ready to have the injection. Seen plenty of needles lately.

I'm only going out when I need to but miss our regular visit to see our local Son, Wife and grandchildren, they are now off school as it their classes have been closed due to COVID.

So far everything sounds good to me.  Yes there may be a minimal risk, but we all have to make cost/benefit choices - have you crossed the road recently for example?  I'm "clinically extremely vulnerable" and as such catching the bug could well be a one way ticket.  Sure there may be a few side effects (or maybe none, I never had any after the 'flu jab), but they'll not be as bad as chemo or do the damage that radiotherapy does.

The newspaper`s for the toilet, was a Friday night affair. We provided enough paper to what we
though would last a week. String, was the upper class way, of hanging the paper.  A nail was
considered a `common`way of finishing the `job`.
Yes when I was a boy, living with my Mum we used to get the old newspapers and cut them up into postcard sized bits. we must have been "upper class" as we had string, but I'm sure we were'nt with my  Mum a widow. Sometimes we used to get soft tissue paper in the box coming back from the laundry interleaving the clothes, and we thought that was a real luxury! That too got cut up and hung in the toilet.

I went out my front door to clap the N.H.S & Carers at 8-00 pm, I have been a out patient
of a hospital, twice this year. I received very good treatment, from the doctors & nurses.
[/quo

The CLAP. yes all finished now, but when we joined the clap in the summer in Walderslade it was very emotional: cars driving past with horns blaring, people outside their homes clapping and waving across the street to each other, a drum playing, children across the valley bouncing on their out door trampoline, even one week a bonfire burning and fireworks going off. Lasted for about 10 minutes, people that never knew each other joining in a common cause. Very emotional even to think of it.

Today as daft as it may sound , I ventured out of my front door and actually went to a shop ! First time for 3 weeks. Have tried to keep occupied indoors and in the garden but can only do what the poor old worn out body finds acceptable , so the garden still looks like a jungle but the foxes like it ( 2 at the moment ) and I watch them as often as possible. What a sad life  :P x
I just hope everyone stays well and that this will soon be over so we can all get to see family and friends again.
Well we are back in lock down again, but still here thankfully. Our garden has been an absolute delight since March. My wife spent hours filming multitudes of bees and butterflies on her little phone camera. And flowers have been amazing. We had some plants delivered on Easter Monday from a nursery and they have given pleasure all summer. We have had foxes, squirrels, all sorts of birds and insects.
We even celebrated VE day in garden with Union Jacks around our summer house and up the steps. We joined in with our family in Cheshire via this wonderful Zoom, and we were all able to eat tea virtually together, and even play Bingo with them via zoom.Monty Don said in the last edition of Gardening World that "normally we look after our gardens, but this year, our gardens have looked after us!" So true.
Six months at home was not so bad. If it was moveable I tidied it, if it was fixed I painted it. Hence a painted patio and a garden shed that has never been so tidy before!!
Keep safe again during this lock down.

So, Tier 3 it is. But why do much of the media keep referring to “Kent and Medway”, when surely Medway is in Kent!

As I am about 100yds inside Swale I can understand the mutterings of those dragged down (or is it up) to Tier 3 when locally it is not such a problem, but micro dividing areas would surely simply lead to more confusion - and a lot of traffic out looking for an area with an open pub!

As for Christmas, Bah Humbug is the way to go...

I think they refer to Kent and Medway because Medway is a seperate Unitary Authority within the Kent County Council as opposed to the other constituencies of KCC.

<rant>The side effects of the pandemic are getting well past a joke.  I've just spent the afternoon trying to phone the doctors' to get an appontment for my anti-cancer injection.  I need it once every 12 weeks to keep "the alien" in check.  60 attempts to get through, and on the 61st attempt finally got in the queue.  45 minutes of mind-numbing musak later and at last I was able to speak to a person, only to be told that the appointments for the week of the 17th are too far in the future, try again next week.  The frustrating think is that is just what they said last week - try again this week. Oh, and before you ask last week was a similar number of failed connections and then a long wait with the same din.</rant>

Much to my surprise (given how careful we have been in our house), we all have Coronavirus!  Yuk.

It came via my daughters school, and was thus inevitable I suppose that we would get it.

I thought a quick summary of what happened may be interesting to those who have not had it yet, and a nervous (like I was).

My first clue, was on the Tuesday morning when I could not taste my breakfast, that, and a very mild headache. I worked all Tuesday (from home) and was busy so did not really think much about it.

Wednesday the clues were stacking up, and I felt very cold a lot of the day... still no taste, but no real major issues.  It just felt like the start of a cold.

On the Thursday evening I went to bed at 8pm, oh dear... but not before booking a Coronavirus test for the following day at 10am - I thought I would know the worse soon.   Thursday night was terrible, vivid dreams, freezing cold and i could not settle to sleep.

Friday was much the same.

By the time my results came in on Saturday afternoon I was feeling much better.  The results were Positive for Coronavirus.  This is the start of many many text messages and phone calls from Test and Trace.  They don't give up.

Sunday I leapt out of bed as usual and have felt fine ever since.

And so my summary is, I had it for probably 3 days of which two were rough.  And then it was back to normal. I am 54 so not in the worst part of the age range, but even so the prediction is 12% of people will be hospitalised.

All back to normal now.
DTT

Good to hear you are back to normal.  Also good to hear that T&T were persistent, there's been a lot of (probably justified) criticism in that direction.  I'm still nervous though, 10 years older, asthmatic, diabetic and with cancer.  Wife's a teacher, elder son is a trainee teacher and younger son is due back from uni on Saturday.

Thanks DTT very useful 1st hand experience is always good to know, glad you back to normal.

I'm trying to keep clear but now my son has 2 people in his office confirmed and with his daughter at school and his son at nursery there remains a high risk of him getting it. So we are keeping clear for the time being and a Sunday Zoom is the best we can do. Still planning to meet up for Christmas if he stays clear of it.

castle 261. I thought it very relevant in that program when that postal worker who nearly died, said that there were people in his office who never wore masks with a "why should I,I,I?" attitude. I'm sure that that attitude is partly responsible for a lot of outbreaks.  p.s. I sent a message to DtheT saying how glad I was to hear that he was now well again- but it didn't appear on KHF!
Title: Re: Coronavirus. 2020
Post by: stuartwaters on December 10, 2020, 11:49:56 AM
Glad to know all are well. My employer has taken some good common sense precautions to prevent this disease tearing through the workforce. As we work in the field, outdoors we socially distance and have formed "work bubbles", try to avoid vehicle-hopping as far as possible and ensure social distancing and mask-wearing when working with others outside our own work bubbles.

My dad is in my home support bubble, but my elder daughter, her husband and the grandkids are not. My son in law is a prison officer and they are now tested weekly.

My granddaughter had it but has now fully recovered. Her only symptom was a loss of her senses of taste and smell. She had to isolate in her bedroom for 2 weeks, not easy for a 17-year old. The whole family had to isolate for two weeks as well.

My daughter in the USA had it and had difficulty breathing. Her doctor put her on an athsma-style inhaler and thankfully she's now on the mend.

My grandson has had to stay off school again due to someone in his class catching it.

They reckon it'll be another year or so before things return to anything like normality once the vaccination program gets fully underway.

Good to hear that Castle261.  It seems therefore as if Stewie's gloomy announcement isn't quite the full story.  It did seem odd that vaccinations started elsewhere in December and yet in Medway we had to wait until January 11.  As a "hotspot" I'd have thought we were a priority.

I studied the leaflet they gave me last evening - I saw this vaccine has the 2nd jab in 21 days.
Instead of what I thought - 13 to 15 weeks time. (seems like 12 weeks now - thanks Lutonman)
Strange - my X - had a notice that her jab was to be in Dec - but was cancelled the day before
she was due to have it -  mine coincided with the day - she would have had her 2nd jab.
This one at the Lordswood Centre - was a mass vaccination - I kept six feet apart - others did not.
When we queued up  - to get into the vaccine room - they were inches apart - I went along the passage - to be that six foot gap - a lady with a walker - grabbed my place - I let her have it.

They gave me the offer of ten minute slots -  from 6.40pm to 7.10pm - one on Saturday at 8.15.am.

Never had any reaction from the jab - until the week after - then a sharp pain when I moved my
left arm/hand to the back/side One of the worst pains - I had experienced (I get a dull ache, most
other times) then I was careful not to move my arm to the back - (every one had a left arm vaccine)
One man insisted in his right arm - but no ALL in left arm. My jab was the German one `Pfizer Biontec.
It was a cancellation phone call  (no letter) at 11.00am for a 6.40pm jab - on Jan 7 th - at Lordswood.
No return date given - as it is in the letter most people receive - Ask - if it is a cancellation - as a card
is given - where YOU write the vaccine on the card /where/when - (card is blank for return date too )

I see the Health Minister ducked the question of the `2nd vaccination of the Pfizer BioNTec jab `.
I would have had my 2nd jab, on Jan 28th, then 7 days later. I would have had a better immune
system, to cope with the Kent Strain of the virus. After first jab, I am 84% better, than not have it.
Many people in their late years may not be alive to see the 2nd vaccine, 12 weeks is a long time.
Even 6 weeks when Europe, Germany, recommends a shorter time, are not following the U.K.

This virus is beginning to become a real pain but I hope they don't end the lockdown to early as they have before we have to stop the spread at some stage. It's passed on from one to another so keeping our distance and wearing masks is a must for us all.
As for the jab that's hit and miss they offered me the jab but a long walk from were I live even though there is a place in walking distance, but my surgery said I cannot use that one. Did hear someone say jabs will be no more then a 45 minute drive the first thing I thought of well a 45 minute drive will be a bloody long walk. pr1uk. A lot of towns used to have volunteer drivers who will take carless people to hospital, etc. Maybe they don't exist now though with a warrented fear  of getting infected?

Dave, you beat me to it! :)   I'll just add that in some areas there is a scheme for free taxi rides to and from the jab.  You may need to search through the BBC website to see if the report is still live.

Just to let you know that both my wife and I got our Covid injections yesterday.
Our local surgery organised appointments by text, then when you went online and used the codes from the text you got an appointment.
Very slick, stay in your car until 1 minute before you are due, follow a short, distanced, queue. A quick check of who and when, then further on a briefing on possible problems, then straight into one of five bays set up in the waiting room. We were together, both with 9.50 appointments, Ladies first, then me, then reminder cards for the booster in April. On the way out anyone driving was given a post-it with the time on it and told to sit in the car for 15minutes, just in case of a reaction. Any problems sound your horn. Time on our note was 9.57.
The appointments were only organised on Wednesday. On thursday I got the letter inviting me to arrange a jab through the national set up as I turned 70 on Friday and went up from level 5 to level 4 and so qualified. The local arrangement was taking level 5 (65-70) hence Sally and her friend also got injected.
It should be noted that my wife is Extremely needle phobic so this was a milestone all round.

Both feeling a little bit under the weather today - mind you it is snowing sideways from the North.
So many thanks to the good old NHS
Stay safe

John

I did a full report in my `Journal `on my Jan. 7th vaccine - the 1st one. I did start to write here
about it - but at near the finish - it got wiped out. ( go back on here to page 6 - then scroll down )

Please - do not write in that section - as it is a continuous Daily Journal - come back here & write.

I started that section in August 2020 - the previous section from March 10th 2020 - got wiped out.

I'm just a few months over 70 and therefore in Group 4. I had my jab last Friday. The target is to finish all group 4 people by 15th Feb and the government has asked anyone still in the group who haven't been contacted yet should call their GPs just to make sure they haven't been overlooked.

Reportedly, as a nation we are just a little in front of vaccination targets currently so this would seem to tie in with @Lutonman and wife being called early. I'm wondering if people are being called in age order as well as group order since I'm one of the last (and youngest) in the 70+ group while @Lutonman will be among the seniors of group 5?

At our vaccination appointment the guy explaining what was happening nonchalantly said that the vaccine today is Astra Zeneca, rather in the way of a waiter telling you what’s soup of the day. No doubt some similarity, but amused me.

Boots in Chatham would have been ideal for me - a month ago - Jan 7 - Receptionist at my doctor-
must have had instructions - `if a person can not accept a time slot - go on to the next patient `.
I had to tell her `I think the 6.40pm would suit me best - but I will have to phone my daughter,
as she has the car. The receptionist first called at 11.00 am - She said `I will phone you back at
12.30 PM `- She never did - We went to Lordswood - on the off chance she had booked me in.
I queued up outside - man with clip board said `your name is not on here `just then my own
doctor came out `said `I know him - put him down on your list - the trouble I have now is `I do
not know when I will be returning for my 2nd jab`as our small cards were blank - we had to fill
in the top section - ourselves with the vaccine type & date - the return date was empty. I will
return (if open) the 2nd week in April - if no phone or letter arrives. (Can not get through to surgery)

Lyn L & mmitch.  The C19 jabs are not controlled by the doctors but by another department entirely.Castle seems to be different! From what I can see & hear, & my NHS daughter tells me, the 2nd jabs are all 12 weeks after the first; a case of "don't ring me, I'll ring you"! I suspect the Govt. are using all the first deliveries of the vaccine to get as many people as possible partly immune & 12 weeks gives time for later batches to be used. And in the meantime, everyone has had one jab.

Thank you Dave for your answer.
All I can say is I was surprised I didn't hear from my Dr's as my surgery is in Delce Healthy Living Centre AND is a Vaccine station ! It's only down the road from where I live but a family member had both her parents have theirs there , and they live near Medway Hospital . Just seemed a bit strange to me. It's an awful lot of people to vaccinate though  . Just glad I've had my first one.
Also... I won't be going to Chatham again for a good while yet, apart from the weather it was like a ghost town sadly.

( subsection prostate cancer). I had a bone scan about 5/6 years ago. All clear, so investigation by hand!- or finger actually, by surgeon to discover prostate much enlarged. My psa? was in the 40's so surgeon said no need for biopsy, " as it's not a very pleasant experience"! I've had injections of a pellet of something in my stomach every 12 weeks since. Initially psa went down to 0.4!, which pleased the surgeon. It's gradually crept up to 0.9 now, so all is well still. If it hasn't spread, I think you are on a winner castle 261.

I went for my walk - all along the flat to an outdoor gym, the was wind colder than I expected.
The outdoor gym closed for the winter, in November, now the gates were open so I went through.
I did not get far as the wind was much keener there. I turned back - the wind in my face this time.
I forgot to take my blue inhaler with me - so I stopped to find a bit of shelter from the wind.
I met a man about 60 + who uses the gym every day last September -  invited me to try some
of the equipment - I declined - although I liked the `walker `but ( there is always a but ) those
roller you walk on - looks TOO free to me - I might try it with him if he is still around.
The end of the warm weather tomorrow - still it has been nice in the sunshine.
I cant use any of the others equipment - as I still have my right arm dislocated - cant be fixed.

Dave, that may be Zoladex, that's what I get every 12 weeks.  PSA dropped from 36 down to 0.01, but has crept back up to 0.56, a bit faster than expected.  Last phone call the oncologist stopped muttering about 5 years and now implied at least 3. :(
Castle261: I know what you mean about the wind.  I headed out on the Medway in the dinghy then decided that a half mile trip wasn't a good idea, since the return trip would be after the tide had turned and the waves would turn to a short chop with white horses.  I'll try again tomorrow.
Title: Re: Coronavirus. 2020
Post by: stuartwaters on April 01, 2021, 05:26:10 PM
They don't think I have Prostate Cancer, but it is enlarged. My PSA count was a little high, but nothing to worry about. The reason all this is being done is because my brother has kidney failure and I was going through the workup to make a live kidney donation when they discovered a slightly high PSA Count. The Transplant Service wanted the PSA count investigated and Prostate Cancer eliminated before they would be willing to proceed further. The last blood tests (in December) showed the PSA count to have returned to normal but the MRI scan done in December showed the prostate to be enlarged. I'll bet it looks like a swiss cheese now  ;D .

Just a quick straw poll to see how many of us have had this nasty disease.

The reason I ask is because I now have it, especially annoying as I've managed to avoid it for 2 and a half years. I know exactly when and where I got it too. My wife and I went to a party a couple of weekends ago and my wife was one of a number of people who got it at the party. I was away working last week and got it when I got home. Felt rough working away again and tested positive in the small hours of Tuesday morning (5th July). I was sent home straight away.

I kept getting letters from Government telling me I was a target ,however,we didn't take really serious precautions ,carried on with  masks  hand washings etc. Both of us are now fully jabbed up and will probably get the new super jab in the Autumn. probably living in a Village environment helped ,although there were plenty of folks affected near us.

All four of my family have had it.  My wife and #2 son had it last Autumn, but managed to avoid passing it on in within the household.  However #1 son had it over Christmas and passed it on to me.  I'm CEV and have been shielded and now jabbed four times.  Fortunately for me the illness was trivial.  I have to have swabs for a PCR test at four-weekly intervals, and we're part of the ONS survey so get swabbed and blood test from them every month, I've just had the blood results back and I have "higher level" of antibodies.  Fingers crossed.

JW, thank you.

Castle261, you stay safe and carry on taking care to stay that way. I'm over the worst of it but still a little rough around the edges. The same goes for you MartinR. My dad (80) had it a few weeks ago but he's always been as fit as a fiddle and it only knocked him over for a couple of days. Took him ten days to start testing negative though. My father-in-law (84) had it bad and it has left him more frail. What really knocked the stuffing out of him was Prostate Cancer a few years ago and he's not been right since.

My Step-daughter, son in law and two of the three grandbabies have all had it, step-daughter twice. Second time around laid her out for a week. My daughter who lives in the USA lost her father-in-law to Covid early on in the pandemic. It was especially stressful for her, because she's married into a Syrian-American Orthodox Christian family with a very strongly paternal family structure and Mikey (my son-in-law) was unprepared for all the extra responsibility of becoming head of the family at such short notice. Proud to say he's growing into the role now though.

Thanks Stuart.  Yes so often prostate cancer is portrayed as "old men moaning about going to the loo", often I'm afraid, coupled with "now you know what we women have to go through".  It's not.  It's the second most common cancer in men, easily treated if caught early, but not screened for and as a result 359,000 men each year die of it.  In the developed world it is the most common cancer in males.  Message to all the men on here: if you're going to the loo more often, particularly at night, or more urgently, get yourself checked.  If you've had a father with it, either parent with breast cancer or any sibling with either, go and camp out on the doctor's doorstep. ;)

The support group I belong to has mainly survivors and some of them are still affected in various ways 10 years or more later.  Of course for the two of us that are terminal it is a bit different and I will echo Stuart's comment that it really knocked the stuffing out of us.  Best wished to your F-i-L.

I had the all clear for Prostate Cancer at the end of last year. I was going through the work-up to donate a kidney to my younger brother and they found an elevated PSA count and that my prostate was enlarged. I had a biopsy done (a feat of endurance in itself) which came back clear. The live kidney donation however is off due to them finding an Adenoma on one of my adrendal glands. That and I'm prone to kidney stones and currently have a small one thats not causing any trouble pursuaded them to call it off. The prostate thing and the kidney stone are being controlled because of lifestyle and dietary changes I had to make anyway, like go from being 100kg to 90. Touch wood and whistle, all appears okay now, PSA count is back to normal, my blood pressure is down to a normal-ish level and I'm cycling the 5 miles to work instead of burning expensive diesel driving in.

Now I had a stone removed - through my mouth later - a pink spray into my mouth - then a nurse slapping
my face - the first thing I said is ` when are they going to start ` - she replied `its all over`.
Sound waves - broke the stone up - I was a big stone - another doctor - told me.

One thing about growing (very) old - is the skin is not very elastic - any more.
I was on a bus - pre virus - standing up - making my way to a seat - when the
bus lurched - I was throw against the upright holding bar - I felt a little pain as
I sat down - I then felt blood running down my arm from my elbow - On undoing
my shirt sleeve - I saw the damage - the top layer of skin was pealed right back
as though a surgeon had done it. My clean hanky was very useful - then.

My wife attended a “Do” with about 70 people over the weekend. Guess what, she tested positive this morning. ::)

Even more channeling of the inner hermit! That’s hermit, not Kermit by the way.

I tested positive for 3 weeks and went to hospital twice with chest "discomfort" which was horrible. Then a couple of weeks negative but still feeling rough but now I've been clear for a month.
Both the wife and I have had 4 vaccinations but although I had it as I said, she's been OK.
Prostrate enlarged a bit but no cancer but I do take drugs to get it back to normal. Mate has had over 20 radiation doses, 3 of very high rate, and now seems to be OK but low testosterone.
Keep well people.

My ever generous wife has, of course given it to me.

So, dozing in the garden just now, awakened by a pretty low and noisy Spitfire flying straight over the top of me.

Very impressive alarm clock ⏰

Lovely wake-up call. I just got back from a weekend away in my caravan visiting the outlaws in Cambridgeshire. I got an alarm call yesterday morning from two US Air Force F15s, presumably on their way somewhere from RAF Lakenheath. Louder than a Spitfire I should imagine.

My wife caught it at a do hosted by Gillingham Street Angels (who she works for) I went to work the Monday after and got back on the Thursday which is when I assume I caught it. I was fine Friday and the weekend and went to work again on Monday. I got called to a job Monday night which was going to go on all week, but came down in the small hours of Tuesday morning. I did a Lateral Flow Test at about 04:30 on Tuesday which was positive so reported it to the Foreman on the job who sent me home right away (from Lancing). I went back to work a week ago last Friday after two negative tests but felt like death warmed over. I only felt "normal" from about yesterday.

I'm normally fit and healthy but this virus knocked the stuffing out of me for about three weeks.

My daughter/granddaughter got caught out with covid restrictions last year at xmas and were not able to visit family in Rainham. (We live in Cornwall.) Ended up with two tickets to the panto in Chatham that we couldnt use. A quick look online highlighted what a great job Gillingham Street Angels do, so we posted them off to their shop. Hopefully someone got to benefit from them.

Had my Covid and flu boosters on Monday morning. Felt very “semi detached “ from life yesterday, headache, clumsy and totally cream crackered.

Better today, even managed  Sainsbury’s and the parallel universe that exists in our excellent local butchers 😳

Had my Covid jab from a doctor which hurt and the flu jab from a nurse that I hardly felt.
I wonder why it is that some people can make it so easy? My own practice nurse recons she has done well over a million! I surpose  practice makes perfect!

I've heard the same comment from one of our practice nurses.  A GP might do one or two jabs in a day, a nurse on 'flu or COVID duty will do 100s.

Had my Covid jab last Friday by a nurse pharmacist at Duncan Road,Gillingham  Osbon Chemists.
didn't feel her do it . Next day small red area and tender to poke. that night woke up sweaty and felt a bit out of it but recovered with no more after effects. Wife didnt feel the Nurse do it but when we got home she had about a 2inch dia.red mark and it was hot and sore. No other after effects except the red mark went bruise looking and faded away in the next few days. Got our flu jabs at Memorial Hospital next week.

My wife and i had both jabs ay the clinic at Wayfield, Chatham. Both arms were sore for a couple of days. The day after the jab  it felt like we were going down with Covid like we experienced before. It was soon over and we are back to  normal.
