I find this old maps site really useful

The free zoom levels on the 1:2500 map options are quite adequate for my general historical investigations.
(I have never paid/subscribed to assess the higher resolution zoom levels)
You can put the pin, to centre the maps, wherever you want.
It has a full screen button which is useful.
The rectangle button to the left of the full screen button gets rid of the annoying blue background.
There are more map options than appear on the screen, so scroll the map options area up and down to see more.

Try this one https://maps.nls.uk/ (https://maps.nls.uk/) you can get access to the OS full zoom levels plus lots of other maps. Use it before they declare UDI.

Thanks Local Hiker for the tip of removing the annoying blue screen.  I have used this site many times for my genealogy research.

This site allows sat view and map side by side. Various OS available on it https://wtp2.appspot.com/wheresthepath.htm (https://wtp2.appspot.com/wheresthepath.htm)    and it is free.

Also http://digitalarchive.mcmaster.ca/islandora/object/macrepo%3A61443 (http://digitalarchive.mcmaster.ca/islandora/object/macrepo%3A61443) takes a bit of time finding what you want but OK once you've played about with it. The collections file has a lot of WW1 maps and aerial photos
